many branches; lots of roots
recently our house has gotten very involved in family history. we were amazed to find that todd and i have no common "roots". todd's family however shares everything including family. i now know what double cousins' mean and that it is completely legal to marry a cousin as long as it's at least removed once. i think jeff foxworthy said it best "if you go to your family reunions to find a wife...."
my suggestions and tips for searching:
1 write down what you know
2 start at familysearch.org
3 try ancestry.com
4 google
5 findagrave.com
6 google some more (great for finding sites as well as people)
7 dont be afraid to email strangers
8 dont be afraid to talk to your family
researching your family history is an amazing and rewarding experience. it is like finding a part of you that you didn't know was missing.
